CAUSE AND EFFECT OF CORONA

This is the medication for the future for those who have not yet contracted Corona virus. ————————————————————————————————————————— This is an attempt to translate a sermon delivered recently in Sinhalese by a Buddhist Saint living in Ritigala Forest Monastery in Sri Lanka. The sermon is significant in the context of the Covid-19 calamity which has appallingly shocked the humankind in the contemporary world. The translation is in response to the open request made by the Saint himself at the end of the sermon to disperse his message for the betterment of the humanity at large. Please note that there could perhaps be issues in clearly expressing the subtle nuances of meaning due to difficulties in translating some of the Pali words and expressions into English While expressing indebtedness to some internet sources for translating some Pali expressions and requesting for apologies for any limitations, the translator believes that it would not severely affect the understanding of the main message contained in the sermon. Other sermons delivered by him could be listened to at the website “ kaalaawatharana.com “ or by visiting kaalawatharana Youtube channel. —————————————————————————————————————————
Here, I do not try to say that you should refrain from talking about Corona or that you should deviate from your attention on the virus. What I emphasize is the need to think in terms of dhamma or cause and effect, instead of being excessively and overly frightened. I saw in some videos some people making hate speeches and wishing that some others would contact Corona. Remember that in the situation currently operating in this universe, such wishes could boomerang upon those who make them. In such a situation, you must remember the dhamma, see the nature of anichcha, recollect the science of how eye, ear, nose and so on come into being, chant some pirith, and live virtuous lives.
At this crucial time, people of wisdom should refrain from opening the doors for the causes of samsara that I mentioned before, and instead they should attentively close them. This is the medication for the future for those who have not yet contracted this virus. We all have deep-rooted or chronic karma or causes amassed by continual association of hatred. We have endless mass of evil collected in samsara by infinite engagement in sinful deeds such as killing, we have been excessively selfish in seeking pleasures through sensory organs, and we have acted with scant consideration on others. The bundle of karma generated in trying to create ‘my world’ of pleasure, totally disregarding others, is huge. Therefore, the opening of doors for such deep-rooted and powerful karma vipaaka amassed through samsara is the biggest folly we can do in our delusion at this present juncture.
Therefore, at the present moment, we need to remember that if our eye, ear and so on are tamed, the causes for the generation of seeds of karma will stop emerging. This universe has built up to operate with the activity of five mechanisms or niyaama dhamma known as kamma niyaama, chiththa niyaama, dhamma niyaama, uthuja niyaama and biija niyaama. There is nobody controlling these mechanisms. Instead, they are the nature of bhawa created by the pattern in which one’s eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind operated through the infinite samsara. In the same way as a farmer sows some of the paddy harvested in the previous season, a certain segment of the effects of our karma is dissolved for the formation of our eye, ear, nose and so on, and these are formed in order to attract what we cultivated in our previous bhawa or births. Therefore, you should remember that if you lose control over the sense faculties, you will be opening up the six doors to the maara or death, and you will be welcoming him inside your house. The consequence is extremely dangerous, and it would be fatal suffering.
Remember that, when we see the nature of this death, this effect of karma may not end up with the present death, and the life after this death too may assume this trembling nature. It may initiate from this infinitely unholy bhawanga or ground of becoming. It is possible that this bundle of effects of karma will follow you for endless number of births causing infinite suffering and torment.
